“How many more kids have to die before we do something?” This is the question asked by Roberto Clemente High School Principal, Marcey Sorenson. Three students have been shot and killed already this year. Most recently, Frances Colon, who was shot and killed Friday, just hours after her and her father watched President Barack Obama speak on gun violence at Hyde Park Academy.
16-year old Jeffrey Stewart was shot and killed on December 9. A month later, 14-year old Rey Dorantes was shot and killed (January, 11). “I’m sick of it,” Sorenson stated. Despite the violence, Sorenson says the students of Roberto Clemente have been coping well. The school has put together a crisis team to support students, parents and staff members.
Colon’s father warns that “its not over,” saying “this is just the beginning. Wait until summer comes along.”
